Description
In the beginning of the 19th century, a large number of Italian immigrants came to Galveston. In 1876, they formed the Societa Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso, or the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society, to help fellow immigrants. In 1888, they purchased land in Calvary Catholic Cemetery and built this mausoleum known as the Italian Vault. It exhibits Gothic style influences, gargoyles, and Corinthian columns at its entrance. There is space inside for 12 crypts. The vault was also used by members of the later formed Italian society, Stella d'Italia, and the Sons of Italy.
