Description
This is one in a series of pieces I'm working on reminiscent of the beautiful old tapestries created throughout history. Tapestries were beautiful and functional. They were used for decorative purposes and to display symbolic emblems, mottoes, and coats of arms. They also provided a measure of insulation in the winter, hanging against cold castle walls.
Weavers often included threads of silk, silver, and gold when creating their tapestries. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Arras, France, specialized in fine wool tapestries which were sold to palaces and castles all over Europe. But, tragically, not many of these tapestries survived the French Revolution as hundreds were burnt to recover the gold thread woven into them.
